If you're like us, shopping for vintage clothing in thrift stores and vintage shops is a fun way to pass a weekend afternoon. It's pretty amazing to see not only what people used to wear, but also how styles and materials have changed over the years. Any good vintage clothing store will usually have a small section of vintage lingerie and underwear, and it's interesting to flip through the racks and check out the slips, underwear and nighties.

 

But what you'll notice is that vintage lingerie all tends to be a bit small, tiny in fact! Women were on average smaller and leaner back in the 1930s - 1970s and anything large or plus that's still around today in a shop is usually snapped up in a hurry! Shopping for vintage lingerie is definitely hit or miss with a lot of luck involved.

 

Today, you don't have to buy vintage lingerie to get a vintage style. Many of the signature garment styles of the 1920s through the 1960s have been revisited as lingerie. The advantages of buying new are that you get newer fabrics and threads and a much better deal on prices. That means sturdier lingerie and cha-ching more money for accessories!

 

We love this sheer underwire garter dress. The style pays homage to the torsolette of the 1950's which women wore under their dresses to help maintain an ideal figure. This one is quite minimal with a built in full cup bra, lush satin center panel and interesting bow details. The attached garters are simply classic and go perfectly with a pair of our seamed stockings. 

 

Another fave is this mesh chemise with attached garters. The chemise is a style of lingerie that has been around since the 1920s and has never really gone away. Today we just call it a nightie or long camisole. This vintage inspired piece fits like a dress with a generous amount of cleavage and is softened by delicate lace trim. It's simple and sexy and the attached garters just take it over the top.

 

And this cute little three piece set features a more modern cut with a vintage style to it. The bold colors, patterns and eyelash trim on the bottom of the garter belt are a throwback to cabaret night club outfits and fancy dress parties. We love how this outfit can be both classic and contemporary all at the same time.
