The Roller Derby Outfit

Roller derby is a mostly all-female skating sport that is very hot right now. You can trace today's competition derby leagues all the way back to the 1930s. The sport was born, died and was reborn several times until it became what it is today. Austin is the home of both the Texas Rollergirls flat track and the Texas Lonestar Rollergirls banked track derby leagues.

A cool and creative part of roller derby is the style of each league team and some of the outfits that skaters wear. Each team has a theme which often incorporates a mixture of hot rod, punk, burlesque, rockabilly and goth. Each derby girl creates a persona and outfit that goes along with her team's theme. The themes and outfits are part of what makes the sport interesting. They can be playful, brash, sexy and tough all at the same time.

A derby girl outfit is not just for show, it's also functional. Girls often layer short shorts or skirts over underwear to create a cute and sporty look. Tights, thigh highs or pantyhose are a necessity and are worn to protect the skater from "rink rash" (ouch!) during inevitable spills and crashes. And because derby girls sweat a lot, fishnet hosiery is a very popular choice because they offer both practical protection and they let the skin breathe. The goal of a derby girl's outfit is to keep her cool and comfortable and not  restrict movement out on the track. For additional style, skaters will often top off their outfit with something cheeky or playful, like a tutu or ruffled panties.

If you're just looking for a roller derby costume, the look is pretty easy to pull off. Layered ruffle panties over fishnet tights or even striped knee high socks with some booty shorts will look cute with a pair of skates. Turn up the hair and makeup a notch and find a flirty top to finish the look.
