Burlesque Fashion Style Overview

When planning a classic burlesque outfit, it’s all about color, fun, and emphasizing your best assets.  Curves are king in burlesque, which is why the corset is often the foundation of a burlesque costume.  While they may not be the most comfortable garments, they create a sexy shape no other garment can achieve, cinching in and boosting up in all the right places.

This is not the time for shyness!  Choose colors and fabrics that showcase your body and style.  Invest in a good, ultra-flattering set of underwear that is enticing to the eye.  Lace and satin are two fabrics that hold up and look beautiful on stage or on camera.  Details like trains, bows, sequins and tassels add an extra oomph to your look.

Accessories become functional in burlesque.  Remember, burlesque is all about the striptease, so layers are key. Stockings, suspenders, silky gloves and garters are all elements that spice up an outfit and can be slowly peeled off.  And, who could forget shoes?  Heels make any woman’s legs look long and beautiful.  Go for classic dress shoe with a dash of sex appeal.  Peep-toe heels, Mary Jane platforms, and lace-up boots are all fabulous choices.

Complete your burlesque look with classic, lady-like hair and makeup.  Think bright (red!), pillowy lips, an arched brow, winged liner and ultra-dramatic eyelashes.  Polished pink or red nails complete the look.  As for hair, take inspiration from retro pin-ups and film stars.  Feminine curls, cropped waves, and retro updos adorned with big flowers are some classic burlesque hair looks.  Just don’t forget the hairspray!
